Square Enix has unleashed the Shadow of the Tomb Raider music on the world! Well, some of it.
Last week, three new tracks were uploaded onto the official Tomb Raider YouTube account, offering a tantalising glimpse into the atmos that’s going to envelope us in Lara’s latest adventure.
It’s all been realised by a “unique music team” led by a man called Rob Bridgett, who says:
“While we are staying loyal to many of the musical recipes and devices that have made the series so successful over the last 5 years, things have evolved a lot in terms of aesthetics. As Lara is in a much darker place emotionally, and a more dangerous place physically, the music needs to represent both of these things. The South American jungle and the Maya civilization both play a central role in the instrumentation of the score, and we are also reaching deeper into Lara’s emotional point-of-view.”
This is true! The music is certainly darker and quite unsettling… But then, the Tomb Raider 2013 soundtrack was hardly a disco fest, with the exception of the thumping main theme.
Anyway, here are the new tracks…
Maya Ruins Escape
A brooding ‘tribal’ sounding piece that picks up the pace towards the end with lots of drums and whistle flutes. (You can tell I’m not a musician.)
Prologue
Pulsing strings to get the blood pumping! A sense of approaching danger with a hint of sadness. A haunting melody.
Obsession
Listening to this piece of Shadow of the Tomb Raider music makes me feel as if I am stalking a deadly predator. Which is probably its intention. Not a track to wind down to after a difficult day…
In need of more?
Crystal Dynamics has rather handily uploaded plenty more Shadow of the Tomb Raider music to its SoundCloud page, so we’re getting dangerously close to a complete album here! Featured tracks include:
- Mayan Tomb (early sketch)
- Shadow Overture
- One Last Breath
- Trail of Blood
See what you think!
Pumped for Shadow of the Tomb Raider yet? What part of the game are you most looking forward to experiencing? Are these latest tracks going to give you nightmares??
